WHY SHOULD I HELP?
Due to the extreme poverty determined by over 20 years of conflict which ended in 2007, most patients are treated for free or at very subsidized rates. Over 70% of the hospital’s operating costs must therefore be covered from abroad.
However, funds for development are usually tied to very specific goals like new buildings or new activities. Supporting the operating costs of existing activities is seldom taken into consideration; indeed, the following expression is common in Africa: “It is easier to build a new hospital than to operate an existing one”, even though new structures often decay or are abandoned for lack of support.
However, maintaining a hospital like Lacor, which has often been the only health care service for millions of individuals, is just as important. Thanks to donors, the Foundations have played a key role in helping the hospital survive through funds, technical and logistic assistance.
