Background
Lacor Schools of Nursing, Laboratory Training, and Theatre Assistants are sister institutions belonging to St.Mary’s Hospital Lacor, located within the hospital premises. Lacor Hospital is approximately five kilometres west of Gulu Town, along Juba Road in the Catholic Archdiocese of Gulu (Gulu District). The Schools were started in 1973, 1979 and 2015 respectively. The founders were, the late Drs. Piero Corti and Teasdale Lucille. From the beginning to date, the schools have been under separate management but with the same Governance and ownership as Lacor Hospital.
The School of Anaesthesia, on the other hand, is a Government school belonging to the Uganda Institutes of Allied Health and Management Sciences, Mulago Kampala.
Laboratory School
Lacor Laboratory Training School is a private not-for-profit (PNFP) training institution belonging to St. Mary’s hospital Lacor, located within the hospital premises. The School was started in 1979 and is now licensed and registered by the Ministry of Education and Sports with registration number ME/TVET/095. It is also registered by the Uganda Allied Health Examination Board, examination centre numbers UA/008, UA/065, UA/097, to grant Certificates in Medical Laboratory, Diploma in Medical Laboratory and Certificate in Medical Theatre Techniques respectively.

Course duration
The diploma course is 3 years broken into 6 semesters. A semester comprises 17 weeks, two of which are dedicated to examinations. There are two semesters per year.
Course description.
A diploma student in Medical Laboratory Techniques is taught Laboratory Management, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology, Haematology, Histopathology, Blood Transfusion and General Laboratory Techniques as basics and Research, Entrepreneurship and Social Psychology as elementary course units.
A Medical Laboratory Technician (Qualification Level 4) is therefore a health care practitioner with the ability to perform routine and general medical laboratory diagnostic tests, carry out basic laboratory research as well as perform management, supervisory and entrepreneurship tasks.
Minimum Entry Requirements
The school uses the guidelines set up by the Ministry of Education and Sports and stipulated in the training curriculums. The minimum requirements for entry into the courses are listed below
Direct Entrants for Diploma in Medical Laboratory Techniques
- Ordinary level Certificate with 5 passes in Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Physics;
- Advanced level Certificate with 1 principal pass in Biology, and a subsidiary pass in Chemistry;
- Direct entry should be restricted to a maximum of three years after secondary school.
Upgrading/Indirect entry for Diploma in Medical Laboratory Techniques
- Ordinary level Certificate with 5 passes in Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Physics;
- Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology;
- One can enrol immediately after completing the Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology.
Entrants for Certificate courses (Medical Theatre Techniques)
- Ordinary level Certificate with 5 passes in Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Physics.
How to Apply
Application forms can be obtained from the office of the Academic Registrar, at a fee of UGX. 20,000 (twenty thousand shillings). Payment is made at the treasurer’s office and a receipt is presented to the Registrar for collection of application forms. The filled application forms are submitted back to the Academic Registrar accompanied by photocopies of academic testimonials. The recruitment process is as shown in the table below

School fees.
The school fee structure, as of March 2017, varies from UGX. 1,200,000 to 1,800,000 for self-sponsored students and UGX 1,900,000 to 2,500,000 for private sponsored students per semester, depending on the activities in the semester.These fees may be subject to change.
